All the balls - skill level guides in Truly Myrtle knitting patterns

All the Balls.jpg

I work hard at writing Truly Myrtle patterns clearly so they're a breeze to follow, even if you’re fairly new to knitting. I include both written instructions & charts (where possible) as well as links to tutorials to help you learn new stitches.

But how do you figure out which patterns won’t be too tricky for you?

If you’ve tried a Truly Myrtle pattern you’ll have seen little balls of yarn at the bottom of the page including all the information you need to get started (needles, gauge & yarn, etc.) Those little balls indicate the skill level required for the pattern.

There are five balls in total and the highlighted balls let you know how many balls out of five that pattern is pitched at.

The fewer highlighted balls there are, the easier the knit will be.

Here’s what the balls mean, ball-by-ball:

1 ball beginner - mostly knits and purls.

2 balls adventurous beginner - a bit more exciting with a few new stitches.

3 balls confident knitter - try some new techniques and maybe a new-to-you construction.

4 balls keen for a challenge - tricky construction and more complicated stitches & techniques.

5 balls super tricky! You’ll need peace and quiet!

I love techniques that look much more complicated than they are and it’s amazing what you can do with just knits, purls and the odd yarn over.

Trust me, fewer skill balls doesn’t mean a boring knit!!

I aim for knitting that’s fun but also relaxing, so you’ll find most Truly Myrtle patterns are just 1, 2 or three balls. Perfect for creative knitters with busy lives!

Having said that … do you feel like a one ball knitter but enjoy a challenge?

Stretch yourself!

Try a two-ball pattern and then a three-ball one. Or, ignore the balls and just jump in!

If you have any questions, you’re welcome to ask them in our “Hangout” on Facebook. It’s friendly and supportive and full of clever knitters who have already knitted the pattern you’re working on.

We’d love to see you there!
